Common faults

What goes wrong on undercounter machines

  • Water left in the bottomGravity-drain machines need a clear drain run with enough fall; pumped-drain machines depend on the drain pump. Either can block.
  • Cycle won’t startA door switch or latch, level sensing, or a seized wash pump, like the Proton Washrite where I found a metal bracket in the pump housing.
  • Not fillingA faulty solenoid valve, a blocked inlet strainer or low water pressure.
  • Lukewarm waterFailed elements, a rinse boiler fault or a thermostat that has drifted.
  • Detergent or rinse aid not dosingPerished dosing tubes, a failed dosing pump or blocked lines, leading to spots and smears.
  • Leaks and dripsDoor seals, or hoses behind the machine that nobody sees until the floor is damaged.

Ventilation

Ventilation around the machine

Heat and steam trapped around a machine can shorten the life of control boards and seals, so I can also advise if the ventilation needs improving.

FAQ

Questions customers ask

My undercounter dishwasher won’t drain. What could it be?

On a gravity-drain machine, check the drain hose and the waste it runs into for blockages. On a pumped-drain machine, the drain pump or its filter may be blocked or faulty. If clearing the tank filters doesn’t help, it needs an engineer.

Can a domestic dishwasher do the job in a café?

Domestic machines run long cycles and aren’t built for constant commercial use or the higher rinse temperatures expected in food businesses. A commercial undercounter washes a rack in minutes and is designed to keep doing it all day.

Can you move or reinstall an undercounter machine?

Yes, whether it’s a refit or a new machine. See commercial dishwasher installation.

How much will a repair cost?

A standard visit (Monday to Friday, until 6pm) is £100 including the first hour of labour, then £25 per 30 minutes. I don’t charge VAT, and parts are quoted and agreed before fitting.

Do you repair undercounter glasswashers too?

Yes. See glasswasher repair.
