Cloudy or Smeary Glasses from Your Glasswasher or Dishwasher

Customers notice a dull pint glass before they taste the drink. When glasses come out cloudy, streaked or spotted, the cause can usually be found. This applies to glasswashers and to dishwashers that wash glassware.

Or email joshua@cornerstonecatering.co.uk with the details of your machine.

What you’re seeing

Film, spots or streaks?

  • White film or chalky hazeUsually limescale. In hard water, if the softener isn’t working, minerals dry onto the glass.
  • Water spots and dropsOften too little rinse aid, so water doesn’t sheet off the glass as it dries.
  • Greasy smears and rainbow streaksTypically too much rinse aid, or detergent residue that the rinse hasn’t cleared.
  • Lipstick and froth left behindCan point to a wash problem: dirty tank water, blocked wash arms, a low wash temperature or the wrong detergent.
  • Haze that won’t come off at allCan be etching, where the glass surface itself is permanently damaged. Glasses already affected won’t recover.

Safe checks

Things your team can check

Start with the chemicals. Make sure the detergent and rinse aid containers aren’t empty and the suction tubes are sitting in the liquid, not lying beside the tub. If the machine has a built-in softener, check it has salt. Then drain and refill the tank: after a long evening it can be holding greasy, dirty water.

With the machine switched off, lift out the wash and rinse arms if your model allows, and check the jets aren’t blocked with pips or scale. A simple test helps too: soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar. If the haze lifts, it’s scale; if it stays, the glass may be etched.

Getting to the cause

Poor glass results can have more than one cause, so it helps to look at the whole picture: wash and rinse temperatures, rinse pressure, dosing rates, the softener or reverse osmosis unit, and the condition of the arms and jets. Built-in dosing can be set to suit your water and machine, and if your chemical supplier maintains the dosing, I can tell you what needs changing. If something has failed, such as a dosing pump, a rinse element or a softener that has stopped regenerating, any parts are quoted before fitting.

FAQ

Questions customers ask

Why are my glasses cloudy even though the machine is new?

New machines still depend on the water and chemicals they’re given. Hard water without softening, or dosing that hasn’t been set up for your site, can cloud glasses in any machine.

How do I know if my glasses are etched?

If a glass stays hazy after soaking in white vinegar and rinsing, the surface is probably etched. That damage is permanent, so those glasses will need replacing once the cause has been dealt with.

Should we hand-polish glasses after the machine?

It shouldn’t be needed when everything is set up correctly, and cloths can leave lint and spread bacteria. Let glasses air-dry upside down in the rack instead.

Would a reverse osmosis unit help?

In hard water, reverse osmosis can give excellent results because it removes most of the minerals before the water reaches the machine. Whether it’s worthwhile depends on your volume and water, and I can talk you through the options.

What does a visit for poor glass results cost?

A weekday visit until 6pm is £100 with the first hour of labour included, then £25 per 30 minutes. If a part turns out to be needed, it’s quoted before fitting.
