Passthrough (Hood) Dishwasher Repair in Bristol

Passthrough dishwashers sit at the centre of busy kitchens, with racks sliding in from one table and out onto the next. I repair hood-type passthrough machines in restaurants, hotels, schools and care homes across Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Or email joshua@cornerstonecatering.co.uk with the details of your machine.

You deal with me, the engineer, directly.

Fully insured (£5m public liability) and DBS checked.

How they work

Where hood machines go wrong

On a passthrough, lowering the hood starts the cycle. Switches or sensors tell the controller the hood is down before the wash pump runs, and springs or counterbalances carry the hood’s weight. When those wear, you get a machine that won’t start, stops mid-cycle or has a hood that drops.

Hood machines can run on a single-phase or three-phase supply, and I work on both. Each element, contactor and phase needs checking, not only the obvious part.

Common faults

Passthrough faults I repair

  • Won’t start when the hood closesWorn hood switches, misaligned magnets or sensors, or damaged wiring.
  • Heavy or dropping hoodTired springs, worn counterbalance parts or hinge wear.
  • Rinse not hot enoughFailed boiler elements, thermostats or a rinse pump fault, which affects hygiene as well as results.
  • Tank losing heatOne element or phase failing, or a contactor that has burnt out.
  • Leaks at the hood or tablingWorn seals, a hood not seating squarely or an overfilling tank.

The whole wash area

Looking beyond the machine

A passthrough is usually connected to tabling, a pre-rinse spray and sometimes a waste disposal unit. When I diagnose a fault, I can look at the full run from water inlet to drain, because a problem in one place often shows up somewhere else.

FAQ

Questions customers ask

What’s the difference between a passthrough and an undercounter dishwasher?

A passthrough has a lifting hood and sits between tables, so racks slide straight through. An undercounter is front-loading. I repair both; see undercounter dishwasher repair.

My hood dishwasher won’t start when I close the hood. Why?

Often a worn hood switch, sensor or wiring fault, though a tank that hasn’t filled or heated can stop a cycle too. I can test each in turn.

Do you work on single-phase and three-phase machines?

Yes. Passthrough dishwashers can be single phase or three phase, and both are routine work for me as an electrical commercial catering engineer.

How much does a passthrough repair cost?

A standard visit (Monday to Friday, until 6pm) is £100 including the first hour of labour, then £25 per 30 minutes, with nothing extra for VAT. Parts are quoted and agreed before fitting.

Can you install a new passthrough dishwasher?

Yes. I install and commission new and replacement machines. See commercial dishwasher installation.
